Outdoor Ceiling Fans-The Basics
An Outdoor Ceiling Fan is very similar to its indoor counterpart in that it is designed to create a downdraft to cool you off. What makes this style different is that it is designed to withstand the elements including humidity, wind, sun and rain. Outdoor fans are made with galvanized rubber steel and have a powder-coated finish which will protect the unit from rust and corrosion. The motor casings are completely waterproof and o-rings, compression fittings and sealants are used. Indoor ceiling fans do not require these components. In addition, the blades of an Outdoor Ceiling Fan are made of injected plastic rather than wood so they are not damaged by dust, humidity, dry air or outdoor temperatures.
When you go to purchase an Outdoor Ceiling Fan, you must know if you need a damp model or a wet one. Damp models are designed for areas of high humidity or condensation, but cannot take direct contact with water. Wet fans are designed to come into direct contact with water. A wet fan can be used in an area designed for damp models, but damp models cannot be used where a wet fan is required.
If you are looking for a damp rated model, be sure to check out the Casablanca Atria Ceiling Fan, model C18G500F. This beautiful fan comes with a faux alabaster motor housing which includes both downlight and uplight. This will illuminate the entire fan, giving it a warm, welcoming glow. Most components come right in the box, but you will be required to purchase the light bulbs yourself. The integrated light fixture requires a 120W incandescent light for the uplight portion and a 100W halogen bulb for the downlight area. Prices start at just $679.95
